International Schools in Shenzhen: A Guide for Expat Families

Diverse children arriving at an international school in Shenzhen

Why school choice is the biggest decision when moving to Shenzhen

For families relocating to Shenzhen, housing and visas are solvable — school choice is the decision that most shapes daily life, because it determines where you live, how your children settle and how smoothly the whole family adapts. Shenzhen's international school sector has expanded quickly, but navigating it from overseas is difficult: school names, curricula, admissions and eligibility can be confusing.

Types of schools

International schools

These primarily serve international families and teach mainly in international curricula, often with a strong English-language environment and diverse student bodies. Entry requirements, language expectations and fee structures vary.

Bilingual schools

Bilingual private schools blend Chinese and international approaches, often with significant English instruction. They can be a good fit for families who want their children to maintain or build Chinese while following an international-style program.

Foreign-linked and specialized campuses

Some schools are linked to particular national systems or educational groups. Understanding the actual curriculum and qualification pathway matters more than the brand name.

Understanding curricula

Families moving to Shenzhen can generally find programs built around the International Baccalaureate, British-style pathways (including IGCSE and A-Level style routes), American-style programs and other international frameworks. When comparing schools, look beyond labels and ask which qualifications students actually graduate with and where alumni go on to study.

How admissions typically work

  • An application with school records, recommendations and sometimes health or background documents.
  • An assessment, interview or student visit, depending on age and school.
  • Availability checks for the specific grade — popular year groups can fill early.
  • Fees and deposits with defined deadlines and refund terms.

If your child has particular learning needs, ask directly about support provision, as this varies considerably between schools.

What to look for on a school visit

A website cannot tell you how a school feels. On a visit, pay attention to class sizes, teacher-student interaction, libraries, sports and arts facilities, outdoor space, security and the general atmosphere. Ask about teacher turnover, student nationality mix, communication with parents and a typical school day. If possible, visit while school is in session rather than an empty campus.

Location matters

Traffic and commute times in Shenzhen make living reasonably close to your chosen school important. Many families choose housing after confirming a school place rather than the other way around. We help families think through school locations together with apartment options in the same area.

How TechVoyage helps families

We support relocating families with school research, communication with admissions teams and accompanied school visits, alongside the practical side of settling in — housing area guidance, payments, SIM cards and daily setup. If you are planning a relocation trip to Shenzhen, we can arrange visits to shortlisted schools so you can decide in person.
