Shenzhen in 3 Days: The Future-City Itinerary

Shenzhen future-city itinerary

Where to base yourself

This route groups the city's technology into its two most convenient districts. Stay in Futian for Huaqiangbei and the classic skyline, or in Nanshan for robotaxis, drones and the waterfront — both are well connected by metro, and you can move between them in about half an hour.

Day 1 — Futian: Huaqiangbei and the skyline

Morning: start with Huaqiangbei while you have energy. Work through the SEG and Huaqiang Electronics World buildings — components, accessories and, increasingly, robot dogs. Go upstairs for the best photographs looking down over the stalls.

Afternoon: head to the Ping An Finance Centre and the Free Sky observation deck, one of the highest in the world. Then walk through Lianhuashan Park for the classic elevated view over the Futian CBD; the Shenzhen Museum is nearby if you want the city's 40-year story.

Evening: watch the central business district light up and eat around the Coco Park or Zhuoyue Center area.

Day 2 — Nanshan: robotaxis, drones and robots

Morning: ride a robotaxi around Nanshan and Qianhai using Pony.ai or Apollo Go. Arrange a drone-delivery order to a pickup locker so you can watch it land and collect it.

Midday: visit the DJI flagship store at OCT Harbor to get hands-on with drones and gimbals.

Afternoon: explore humanoid and robot showrooms, see robot dogs in person, and visit an EV showroom — with a test drive if you carry a valid driving licence.

Evening: the OCT Harbor waterfront, with its light and water show.

Day 3 — Shekou, Qianhai and beyond

Morning: Shekou and Chiwan — the Sea World plaza and waterfront, and the Design Society / Sea World Culture and Arts Centre, with a relaxed lunch nearby.

Afternoon options: explore Qianhai for more robotaxi coverage and the new cityscape, or head into Bao'an. If you'd rather go deeper into technology, arrange a half-day factory or company visit in the wider Greater Bay Area — Dongguan is very close. If you want nature instead, the Dapeng Peninsula offers coast and hiking.

Short on time: the 4.5-hour route

If you only have an afternoon, our guided 4.5-hour tour chains together a robotaxi ride, robot dogs, DJI and a walk through Huaqiangbei. The full-day version adds drone delivery and an electric-vehicle experience.

Practical prep

  • Entry: check the visa-free guide for your passport, and carry your passport with you.
  • Money: set up Alipay or WeChat Pay (including the international Tour Card) linked to an overseas card, and carry a little cash as backup.
  • Apps: install Amap or Baidu Maps, a translate app and the ride apps, and sort an eSIM or roaming before you arrive.
  • Getting around: the metro is excellent and cheap; DiDi and ride-hailing fill the gaps; Hong Kong is a short border crossing away.

Tips

  • Start early; weekdays are best for suppliers and showrooms, while weekends are busier with retail.
  • Some Western websites and apps are restricted in mainland China — download maps, files and entertainment in advance.
  • If possible, avoid major Chinese public holidays, when the city and transport get very crowded.
